Help me Oppo-wan Kenobi. In return have a Mopar.
I was listening to my 1977 8-track recording of the Star Wars sound track (my favorite album on I have on this medium) when suddenly the splice that connects both ends of the tape destroys itself. I opened up the 8-track case and all of the tape fell out. It was a mess, all 1500' of tape was massively tangled. As of now, I have un-tagled the tape, spliced any cuts I had to make (other than the main one that broke), and have reeled it onto a spare 7" reel I borrowed from my reel-to-reel. Does anyone know how to re-load an 8-track cartridge? The tape has to be able to be a continuous loop when playing. My Trans Am's 8-track player would be next to useless if I can't belt out the Star Wars theme song.

:D I'm probably the only 17 year old in my area who even knows what an 8-track is.

I imagine a good number have seen them in their parent's attic or something. However, I'm pretty sure I don't know anyone my age (19) who actually listens to 8-tracks.

Bah! I knew about 8 tracks way before I was 18. 3 years ago. Amateur.

Yea that's pretty much what MOPARs looked like after a few years.

without seeing it, no. you'll need to start off with wearing gloves though...
I've had to do many things like this (and removing tapes from players or cameras that lost their ability to eject)...
Haven't worked on any 8 tracks recently...might not be much help unless you're local to northern NJ...might be able to at least take a look...

My 914 had an aftermarket 8 track put in. I only noticed it after owning for 2 years. I went to clean the glass radio display and it pushed in and thought WTF? Then relised what it was. I think the problem is that if the tracks weren't oiled they would degrade. Not sure if they can be respliced back together.

I have, in fact, reloaded an 8-track by hand. The important thing is to get the wind direction right, leave the correct leg coming out of the center, and most importantly DON'T WIND IT TIGHT. If you wind it tight, the tape won't be able to pull out of the center of the reel, will jam, and will tear.

I'm 28 and have listened to 8-tracks a couple of times. We've got an 8-track player that if my younger brother doesn't steal for his 60's Rover might end up in the Ranchero for gits and shiggles. One of the things I've listened to on 8-track is Uriah Heep's Magician's Birthday. Also, I know how to rewind one and told him just now.

Damn, I wish I read this first. I wound it too tight.
